GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE Pride Colde 1999

Jupiter opposing Mercury brings oomph to Pride month

by Charlene Lichtenstein

Pride month revs up with a rollicking planetary charge. Lucky Jupiter opposes feisty Mercury throughout the month stoking our actions with affirming oomph. There will be outrageous opportunities to combine fun with fulfillment. See you in the Pride parade, cousin... and at the party afterwards.

Aries (March 21-April 20)

Are your ears burning? Partners have some choice comments for you this Pride month. Remember, dear queer Ram, that these honest souls have your best interests at heart. Frankly you could use some improvement particularly in the fashion department. (Is qiana back in fashion?) If you can take it all to heart, I can almost guarantee that your metamorphosis will be fabulous.

Taurus (April 21-May 21)

Come out, come out wherever you are. Gay Bulls are blown out of their closets this Pride month. Make sure that you are appropriately dressed for the occasion; this is the time to transform your life. Everything matters now, so shore up your diet and exercise regime and make it work for the proud new you. Summer is not far off dear; are you ready to strut?

Gemini (May 22-June 21)

Friends figure prominently in your life in Pride month. They open up new vistas and bring you to new levels of enlightenment. Queer Twins can enter this wonderland naively wide eyed or they can try to boss the course. I suggest you allow yourself to be taken by the hand. Think of it as a trip to the moon on gossamer wings and not just one of those things.

Cancer (June 22-July 23)

Pink Crabs may have the professional rug pulled out from under them as career changes come fast and furious. This shifting of the corporate landscape is frightening, but altogether necessary. Begging for your tender vittles from the fat cats is often good for the soul and gives you a cold dose of reality for future survival. Adjust now to rule the roost later.

Leo (July 24-August 23)

Gay Lions are in their Pride perfection this June when global, far reaching ideas reach a wider, more appreciative audience. Speak loudly, proudly and queer my dear to let 'em know who's who and what's what. I personally appoint you the great gay marshal of the parade. Lead us to salvation-and perhaps into temptation as well.

Virgo (August 24-September 23)

They say that the smell of money is intoxicating, so why not release the fragrance and see who bites? Pride month can bring in a bevy of sexual opportunities for proud Virgins who know the meaning of the word generous. But waste not, want not cousin. Don't fritter resources on wasteful dalliances. Find out if they will respect you in the morning before you blow the wad.

Libra (September 24-October 23)

Pride month teaches you a valuable lesson on the give and take of relationships. Proud Libras can be very cavalier about needing companionship and in doing so can fail to balance their personal freedom with the needs of partners. Now you may receive a powerful lesson on the importance of sharing. Wasn't it Sartre who said, "In love, one plus one equals one"?

Scorpio (October 24-November 22)

Sometimes a bolt out of the blue is just what is needed to knock down barriers and saw through mental blocks. Expect such a bolt in Pride month when projects that might have held you up or brought you down suddenly go your way. Queer Scorps should not be afraid to open up their closet door and air the darn thing out. You have nothing to fear but your chains.

Sagittarius (November 23-December 22)

Friends have a way of rolling out the good times this Pride month so join (or lead) the group dynamic and dance the night away. Expect the unexpected through in any fun endeavor when Jupiter transforms the trite into the masterpiece. Proud Archers may find more than they bargained for in any light flirtation. Who knows what can develop with a little piece of cheesecake?

Capricorn (December 23-January 20)

The secret of success this Pride month is to balance professional obligations with personal needs. Balance is the operative word, pal; there is no escaping the fact that one area of your life affects the other now. Gay Caps may have to defer one goal in order to fulfill another. The sad fact of life is that we cannot have it all. For now, just take half.

Aquarius (January 21-February 19)

Aqueerians must get something off their chests. This Pride month encourages you to grab any opportunity to express yourself fully and proudly. Your words pack a punch and can reach global proportions. Don't waste this perfect planetary energy on ego inflating pursuits. I command. you to sound the gay clarion call and take our cause one giant step further.

Pisces (February 20-March 20)

Gay Fish are in for a psychological reevaluation this Pride month. Suddenly you awake to find that all that glitters is not gold; there is more to life than fealty to the almighty dollar. This is not to say that you will suddenly give away all you possessions and begin to talk to the birds, but you will no longer be at the mercy of the gold standards of others. Freedom!

Across 'the big pond,' Pride events have grown

In North America, Gay Pride events began in the 1970s to celebrate gay community solidarity, and grew to become. huge events in the '80s.

Just across the Atlantic, however, Gay Pride events are a relatively new phenomenon, only gaining mass participation in the '90s. Most major cities in Europe now have their own events, drawing from the local gay community and inbound travelers from around the continent.

Among the largest gay communities in Europe is London, and correspondingly London Pride has grown to become one of the major Pride events in the world.

But according to Peter Schulze, president of Family Abroad travel agency in New York City, his customers don't want to just go to London for the weekend and return home. They "prefer to extend their visit to include some of the destination's countryside."

For example, he offers a package that includes the big-city feel of London along with the quaint, gay village atmosphere in Manchester and the surrounding northern countryside.

Manchester's gay village offers a warm environment, where the locals are "far more friendly, outgoing and accessible" than in larger cities, according to Schulze.

A primary point of interest among gay and lesbian travelers is the opportunity to meet locals and get a perspective of gay life in the destination. Most of Family Abroad's programs, Shulze says, include one or more briefings on gay activities and venues hosted by local gay residents, making for easy contact with the local gay community.

To invite even more people to cross the Atlantic this Pride season, the British Tourist Authority, the official government body responsible for promoting tourism to Britain, recently published its first tourism guide written and designed for American gay and lesbian travelers.

The 20-page color brochure, Britain, You Don't Know the Half of It! blends traditional and contemporary themes with comprehensive information about popular tourist destinations, and places of interest to gay and lesbians travelers. In particular, London, Manchester and Brighton are highlighted for their gay and gay-friendly pubs, nightlife and accommodations.

"We believe that throughout Britain, there exists a warmth and welcomeness unmatched by any other European destination," said Robert Titley, the agency's director of communications.
